Offspring of large and small animals at the zoo

On 17 July 2019, another offspring was born at Chemnitz Zoo. A female Somali wild ass (Equus africanus somalicus) now increases the existing herd to a total of five animals. This is the first offspring for the mother "Hera". However, she is already looking after her foal very routinely.

The wild ancestors of the domestic donkey are one of the most endangered animal species. Chemnitz Zoo has been keeping this species since 1997 and offspring have been born here regularly since 2003. The zoo is thus successfully participating in the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP), which is coordinated by Basel Zoo.

With a little luck and patience, you can also observe further growth in the marmoset house
house. To do this, you should also look upwards in the pygmy marmoset enclosure and look for the mountain guinea pigs (Kerodon rupestris). Unlike their "big" relatives - the capybaras - the flatmates in this enclosure are very good climbers. The young animal was born on 3 July 2019 and is now exploring the enclosure on its own.

Opening hours of the zoo in summer: 9:00 to 19:00, last admission 18:00
