Northern lights, puffins and fjords - an extended trip to Norway

Lecture by Ulrich Schuster on 13 November 2019, 6.30 pm at the TIETZ

On Wednesday, 13 November, from 6.30 pm, Ulrich Schuster, former director of the botanical garden, will talk about his extensive trip to Norway in the TIETZ event hall. Admission is free.

Ulrich Schuster used his camera to capture images of golden plovers, falcon skuas, moor ptarmigans and bluethroats in the tundra. He was able to observe and photograph guillemots and puffins on the bird cliffs. These images form the first part of his presentation. In the second part, he presents winter impressions of Lofoten and Vesteralen. Snow-covered mountains, ice-free fjords and Robur houses standing on stilts create marvellous landscapes. Of course, the northern lights are not to be missed. He was even able to observe a few bird species in the freezing cold.

"I made a dream come true!" says Ulrich Schuster. He drove 3000 kilometres to Varanger in Norway with a friend. Varanger, the peninsula between the Barents Sea and the fjord, is the only tundra area in western Europe. The animal and bird life is partly arctic and extremely diverse. Numerous ornithologists and nature lovers from Europe are therefore drawn to this biodiversity hotspot every year.
