New primary school Jakobstraße

At its meeting today, the city council decided to build a new primary school in Jakobstraße in order to expand the capacity of primary schools in line with school network planning. The new two-form entry primary school will cover the demand for eight classes for the 2021/22 and 2022/23 school years.
In addition to the new school building, the construction project also includes the construction of a two-field sports hall and the associated outdoor facilities.

The existing outdoor sports facilities at "Bunten Gärten" are already being used or will be used by other schools such as Georg-Weerth-OS, Rudolfschule GS, BSZ Technik I in the future. This also applies to the planned new two-field sports hall, which will also be available in the afternoons for all-day school activities, for the neighbouring daycare centre and for clubs.

The school building and the sports hall will be built as completely barrier-free facilities. The outdoor facilities are barrier-free or, due to the hillside location, low-barrier in some parts.

The location was preferred due to the existing surroundings of the "Bunte Gärten" play, sports and leisure facilities, the neighbouring "KiFaZ" (children's and family centre, Tschaikowskistraße 9) of Saatgutgärten, the existing residential buildings and the urban development situation. In April 2020, the city council decided that the land in question would be acquired by the city of Chemnitz in third-party ownership.

The costs for the new school building (including the purchase of the land) are estimated at approx. 19.4 million euros. Construction is scheduled to start in August 2020 and end in October 2021.
The new school location along Jakobstrasse offers the opportunity to improve social care in southern Sonnenberg and to upgrade and stabilise the area in terms of urban development and functionality.

The "Bunte Gärten" children's and family centre in the middle of the square already has an open, integrative concept with a kindergarten group run by the Jewish community. With the planned project, a campus area is to be developed on the southern Sonnenberg, which can be a meeting and exchange point for children, young people and adults from the neighbourhood, but also for residents from other parts of the city and school districts.
