New bird of prey species at the zoo
A pair of desert buzzards, a new species of bird of prey, moved into Chemnitz Zoo almost a fortnight ago. They come from the Marlow Bird Park. The speciality: Desert buzzards are the only species of bird of prey that lives and hunts in groups. This means that the zoo will not be limited to just one pair, but will be joined by others. Groups of five to six birds are often found in the wild.
Even if the name does not necessarily suggest it, desert buzzards do not exclusively colonise deserts. They also occur in savannahs and dry scrubland, and more rarely in wetlands. Their natural range extends from southern California to central Argentina and Chile.
