NEW BEGINNINGS - OPENING MINDS - CREATING SPACES

Chemnitz applies to become European Capital of Culture 2025

Chemnitz is applying for the title of European Capital of Culture 2025 with the motto OPENING MINDS - CREATING SPACES.

New beginnings and upheavals are themes that Chemnitz has experienced many times in its eventful history and wants to make them tangible for all Europeans.
Chemnitz - Karl-Marx-Stadt and Chemnitz again are just two upheavals that have changed a lot in and with the city.

Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig commented: "We think that our application will make a decisive contribution to developing a future-oriented self-image for Chemnitz from the ruptures and contradictions of the past - in other words, new beginnings - and this in a European context. We have seen it many times: new beginnings are dynamic and optimistic, driven by curiosity about the unknown and hope for a better future."

Chemnitz is applying for the title of Capital of Culture because they want to show Europe how the people in this city have repeatedly responded to crises and collapses with new inventions and new beginnings, the Lord Mayor continued.

The project manager of the Chemnitz bid, Ferenc Csák, commented on the motives: "Chemnitz sees the European Capital of Culture bid as a great opportunity: we want to venture new beginnings together with Europe. We want to ask both Chemnitz and Europe: What connects us? How can we shape a Europe worth living in together?"

Csák went on to say that, in addition to the broad participation of many people in the city during the bid book creation process, the most important building blocks of Chemnitz's bid were action. The first projects have already been started and others will be implemented in the city - regardless of the outcome of the application process. The bid is an opportunity for Chemnitz, with its cultural diversity, to make this cultural heart of the city more tangible and visible for everyone.
