New arrival at the zoo: New member of the dog family I New arrival among the cats
There is a new animal species to marvel at in the zoo. A female corsac or steppe fox has recently taken up residence at the facility. The five-year-old fawn came from Brno Zoo in the Czech Republic. A male is soon to follow. The rather dainty-looking steppe foxes are found in Central and East Asia as well as in south-eastern Eastern Europe. As the name suggests, they mainly inhabit steppe landscapes and semi-deserts.
There is news from the manulas. Offspring were born here at the end of June. The kittens spent the first few weeks together with their mother exclusively in the whelping box. Now, with a bit of luck, the three - two females and one male - can also be observed in the outdoor enclosure - especially in the morning or late afternoon. The father also has access to the family.
Steppe foxes and man owls partly inhabit the same habitat and are well adapted to extreme weather conditions. They can cope with severe winter cold and summer drought by changing their fur, among other things. The soft and silky winter fur of the corsac is often the species' undoing, as it is highly sought after as fur and the animals are therefore hunted.
