Mayor Barbara Ludwig: Establish comprehensive teacher training in Chemnitz too
Statement on reporting on the ongoing teacher shortage in the region at the start of the school year
Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig: "Many municipalities are doing their homework as school authorities and are also investing in all-day care. We have rising pupil numbers in some cases. The blatant shortage of teachers makes it clear that the Free State of Bavaria is heading towards an unsustainable situation. With more and more teachers retiring over the next decade and over 17,000 new teaching positions to be filled, this means that teacher training in Chemnitz is a state obligation in order to meet demand.
That is why regionalised teacher training must finally be introduced to ensure that excellently trained teachers teach in every school, regardless of the type of school, in every lesson, regardless of the subject, whether in a large city or in the region, for years and decades to come.
In order to achieve this goal, which is as crucial as it is self-evident, teacher training in all types of schools is a necessary prerequisite, not only at the universities in Dresden and Leipzig, but also in Chemnitz. This is the only way to ensure that teachers trained here remain in the region's schools after completing their studies. The shortage of teachers must be solved in the long term. Under no circumstances should lateral entry programmes be a permanent or normal state of affairs. Today, Saxony is still ahead in education monitoring. Tomorrow only Dresden and Leipzig? The question alone shows the need for action."
