Maintenance of urban parks and trees
Excess funds for maintenance measures in public green spaces and the purchase of large-scale technology
At its meeting today, Chemnitz City Council decided to make a total of 900,000 euros available for maintenance measures in public green spaces and for the purchase of large-scale technology:
350,000 euros of this is to be used in the service area for maintenance work in public green spaces. The additional requirement has arisen due to considerable cost increases. In addition, urgent additional tree maintenance work is required due to drought and wind damage in order to ensure traffic safety. This also includes cleaning in the city centre (by the ASR), green maintenance and basic care for newly acquired areas as well as maintenance and repairs to public parks.
550,000 is to be spent on the purchase of technology for tree irrigation and the sustainable organisation of material cycles in urban green spaces.
Due to the well-known weather developments of recent years, urban greenery is in a permanent stress situation that threatens its existence. In future, it will be necessary to water around 6000 young trees regularly as a minimum. For this purpose, a multifunctional and all-terrain equipment lorry with modules for water tank with watering arm and wood chipper with wood feeder is to be purchased. Furthermore, a lorry with a water tank and a wood chipper for processing the wood into fuel for municipal facilities is to be procured.
The surplus funds are available due to additional revenue from the general and investment key allocations for 2020 that the City of Chemnitz received from the state of Saxony. The expected key allocations for 2020 were already planned in 2018 due to the two-year planning. At that time, the economic situation, population development and tax capacity of the City of Chemnitz as well as the total revenue could not yet be accurately estimated.
In addition, the so-called key mass of the Free State was increased compared to 2019 from the 2018 settlement. The key mass serves as the starting point for calculating the key allocations for the respective municipality.
