"I make your clothes! The strong women from Southeast Asia"

Exhibition of the association FEMNET e. V. at the adult education centre from 15 June

From Monday, 15 June, the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre will be showing the exhibition "I make your clothes! The strong women from Southeast Asia" organised by FEMNET e. V.

The exhibition centres on nine young women who work in textile factories in Cambodia and Bangladesh. Every day, they work under the harshest conditions to produce jeans, dresses and T-shirts that can be found in local wardrobes. The portraits are complemented by short interviews in which the women talk about their working and living conditions.

The exhibition will be on display on the fourth floor of the TIETZ until 30 July 2020 during the opening hours of the adult education centre (weekdays from 8 am to 10 pm and Sundays from 8 am to 5 pm).

The portraits invite viewers to take a special perspective: The women depicted are not portrayed as oppressed or suffering within a global textile chain who can do little to change their life situation, but as strong, clever and self-confident personalities who stand up for their working and living environment. Their concise reports provide an insight into their everyday working lives, their social commitment and their plans for the future.

The textile workers were portrayed for the posters by Dutch photographer Marieke van der Velden in 2013. The travelling exhibition has been on tour in Germany, Austria and Switzerland since 2017. It was originally organised by the Dutch Clean Clothes Campaign.
