Grass and leaf donations wanted for zoo residents
In the summer months, Chemnitz Zoo likes to provide its grass and leaf-eating residents with very fresh food. There are several areas in and around the zoo that are managed by the zoo for this purpose. Fresh grass can be mowed here several times a week, which is then distributed to the animals.
Due to the current drought, these sources of food are slowly coming to an end. As the changeover to stored hay will have to wait a little longer and the fresh feed simply tastes better to the animals, the zoo is asking for support from the public.
If any of the citizens of Chemnitz have any green cuttings to spare, please contact the zoo.
Important: Green cuttings do not mean lawnmower cuttings - these are too short.
Prerequisites for a suitable food donation are
- Freshly mown grass with a bar mower or scythe (maximum one day old)
- Hedges or prunings from the following trees: willow, beech, birch, hazelnut, alder, hawthorn, ash, oak, hazel
If it is possible to deliver the food donation to the zoo yourself (possible from Monday to Sunday), please contact the administration (0371/850028) one day in advance.
Large meadows near the zoo can also be mown by the zoo itself using a tractor if they have a suitable access road.
The zoo and especially its residents would be delighted to have your support.
