"Getting things rolling - flowering meadows in Chemnitz"

Invitation for media representatives: 22 May, 9.30 am, Hilbersdorf meadow area adjacent to the allotment garden association Reichsbahn-Wohlfahrt e.V.

On Wednesday, 22 May at 9.30 a.m., two strips of flowering meadow will be planted on the meadow area in Chemnitz Hilbersdorf adjacent to the Reichsbahn-Wohlfahrt e. V. allotment garden association with children from the Admedino day care centre and company kindergarten (see attachment for directions). Representatives of the media and interested parties are cordially invited to this event.

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Insectarium, the Museum für Naturkunde Chemnitz would like to set an example for the diversity and sustainability of the insects that surround us by planting flowering meadows. Two strips of flowering meadow, each 50 metres long and 10 metres wide, have been created on the meadow area in question.

The two areas are located on municipal plots of land on which a "NABU Obstsortenparadies" orchard was planted in 2016 by the Naturschutzbund Deutschland, Regionalverband Erzgebirge e. V. (Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union of the Erzgebirge) and was kindly made available for this project in consultation with the Parks Department.

The soil preparation was organised by the Parks Department and implemented by the agricultural company Thiele-Weigand GbR. The seed garden Nachhall e. V. Chemnitz provided high-quality, regionally typical seeds with up to 60 species. In an educational event at the Museum für Naturkunde Chemnitz, the children were informed about the world of insects and the importance of flowering meadows. The children made the seed balls under supervision. These will finally be distributed on the prepared areas on Wednesday.

Signs at the flowering meadows draw attention to the special nature of the areas. The project is being scientifically supported by the Museum of Natural History and the Parks Department.

As perennial flowering meadows provide food and hibernation aids for insects, the two strips of flowering meadow created contribute to the promotion of the insect world in the urban area.

The associated "NABU fruit variety paradise" is part of the "Apfel2000" project. The aim is to plant and preserve as many old apple varieties as possible. There are currently 155 trees of 82 varieties on the site.

The creation of the flowering meadow strips is an action in public space with symbolic character for Chemnitz. They provide impetus for experimental and sustainable action and make inner-city co-operation visible.
