Final spurt for Chemnitz's bid for the title of European Capital of Culture 2025
City Council decides on the final application procedure
At its meeting today, Chemnitz City Council commissioned the administration with the final application for the title of European Capital of Culture 2025.
In December 2019, Chemnitz made it to the final round of the competition for the title of European Capital of Culture 2025. This is an invitation to the city to submit a second, more detailed bid book, taking into account the jury's recommendations. The Chemnitz City Council has now decided to submit the application book in the required form to the Kulturstiftung der Länder by the deadline of 21 September 2020.
The administration has also been asked to support and organise the further jury process. Specifically, this means organising the visit of members of the European jury to Chemnitz in October 2020. The aim is to credibly present to the jury and make it possible to experience what the process up to the title, in the title year and from 2026 onwards means for the city's development. In addition, a presentation to the European jury on 24 October must be prepared. The aim will be to present the artistic programme, the European dimension and the central idea of Chemnitz's bid in an emotional and well-founded manner and to answer the jury's questions.
Following the presentations by the five German candidate cities (in addition to Chemnitz, these are Hanover, Hildesheim, Magdeburg and Nuremberg), the jury will recommend the German candidate for the title of European Capital of Culture 2025 on 28 October 2020.
The development of a joint working structure between the City of Chemnitz and the Free State of Saxony is also on the agenda of the tasks assigned to the administration by Chemnitz City Council, as is the preparation for the establishment of a Capital of Culture GmbH if the title is won.
At the same time, in connection with the budgets for the following years, a proposal is to be drawn up as to what steps will be taken if the title is won or if Plan B is implemented, i.e. if Chemnitz does not win the title.
In March 2019, the City Council commissioned the administration to support and organise the entire jury process up to the award of the European Capital of Culture 2025 title (resolution B-012/2019).
