Next Tuesday, 21 May at 5 p.m., the City of Chemnitz Environmental Agency invites you to an excursion on the topic of habitats, biodiversity and orchid blooms in the "Spring area in the southern Zeisigwald" nature reserve. The excursion will be led by Holger Tippmann. The meeting point is the Heideschänke pub on Eubaer Straße. On a circular route through the area, species and habitats will be presented and the development of the area and necessary maintenance measures will be explained. Participation in the excursion is free of charge.

In the middle of the southern Zeisigwald forest is a biotope mosaic of colourful flowering meadows, ponds and pools, reedbeds and other habitats. It is popular with walkers. It's hard to believe that until shortly after reunification, this was once a military site: the refuelling depot of the Soviet armed forces. With EU funding and an ABM programme, buildings and 220 steel tanks were removed in the 1990s and the area was renaturalised. A large number of animal and plant species quickly colonised the area, including many rare and endangered species such as the broad-leaved orchid, a native orchid species. The biotopes are not subject to any utilisation. The area has therefore been able to develop almost undisturbed. Due to its high ecological importance for many species groups, the "former petrol depot" was placed under protection in 2002 as the "Spring area in the southern Zeisigwald" nature reserve (FND).
