Petrified forest, petrified world (project workshop during the winter holidays)

Admission: free

Imagine if our world were to be fossilised tomorrow! What would future scientists find of us? That's exactly what happened 291 million years ago in Chemnitz. When a volcano erupted back then, animals and plants were buried under its ashes. They have been preserved as fossils to this day and give us an insight into the distant past. In the holiday course, we transfer this gigantic event to the present day. We go in search of objects and places that are typical of our time and could be fossilised in the event of another volcanic eruption. We use these to build models that will later be exhibited in the museum.

The project week is suitable for ages 10 to 16. The number of participants is limited to 10. Contact person: Isabelle Ehle (only by pre-registration until 12 February 2020, 0371 / 488-4555 or ehle(at)naturkunde-chemnitz.de).

Winter holiday offer for individual visitors
Tuesdays, 11/18 February, 10 a.m. and Thursdays, 13/20 February, 2 p.m.
On the trail of Schnappi and Co.

Location: Museum of Natural History Chemnitz, Moritzstraße 20, 09111 Chemnitz
Admission: The "Window into Earth History" project is subsidised by the ESF. The events are free of charge.

Together we will go on a journey to the Chemnitz Petrified Forest and take a look at the exhibition. How is a fossil actually formed, when did it once live and how did we discover it in the centre of Chemnitz? We will find answers to these questions together. At the end, you will design a wood decorated with a fossil picture. Registration required, fenster(at)naturkunde-chemnitz.de, 0371 / 27369367

28 November 2019 to 28 August 2020
Young workshop - My museum of dreams

Location: Museum of Natural History Chemnitz, museum ticket office
Admission: 4 euros, concessions 2.50 euros, children and young people up to 18 years free

This year, the Museum of Natural History measured, sawed, filmed and made pottery. Pupils from the Chemnitz school model brought the Chemnitz Petrified Forest to life with games, animated films and audio contributions. The special exhibition now shows the creative results, which are to become part of the new permanent exhibition, to a broad public. Come and marvel, browse and play!
