My Russian years - contemporary witness talk with Gisela Franke from Chemnitz
Venue: TIETZ, Room 4.07
Admission: free
Gisela Franke, now 94, from Chemnitz, is one of the families who were deported to the Soviet Union by the Soviet military in a secret operation in October 1946. The fathers of the so-called "specialist families" were engineers and technicians in the aircraft and machine industry - a living reparation from the Soviet occupation zone for an unknown period of time. In her book "Our Russian Years", published in 2018, author Simone Trieder tells the stories and fates of these people, based on her own mother's diary. With additional voices of contemporary witnesses, a kaleidoscope of the five to eight years in Russia is created, which were experienced very differently by the children of the deported specialists. In this way, a hitherto almost forgotten chapter of post-war history is illuminated in detail.
On this evening, the author will present some of the results of her research and will be in dialogue with contemporary witness Gisela Franke.
Friday, 6 September, 2 to 4.15 p.m.

Inclusive courses at the VHS
The Chemnitz Adult Education Centre is opening up its range of courses to people who have to live with restrictions for various reasons. As usual, you will find our programmes here in the section "Living with disabilities".
Please contact us if you would like advice or need support for your participation in the course. We are here for you!
The Chemnitz author Effi Winkler has published a children's book. It tells short stories about how girls and boys encounter people with disabilities in their environment and how these people cope with their everyday lives as a matter of course. The children learn about aids such as wheelchairs, canes and sign language in an endearingly unselfconscious way. It's about communicating with each other and living together respectfully. It's about mutual consideration - whether with or without a disability. Everyday situations are presented in a playful and humorous way, inviting readers to smile and reflect. At the event, the author will read from the book and children from the "Flemmingstraße" day care centre will create little scenes to go with it. Children aged 5 and over, parents, grandparents and day-care centre groups are particularly invited.
1st presentation: 9.15 am,
2nd presentation: 10 a.m.
The event is part of the European Mobility Week. Groups of 8 people or more are requested to register.

"And what will tomorrow bring?" A dialogue on the major trends of the future
The world was and is constantly changing. Today we are experiencing upheavals that can be described as digitalisation, automation and globalisation. In a five-part TV series entitled "Megatrends in dialogue", presenter Alexander Thamm took a look into the future on ARD-alpha at the beginning of 2018. He met with renowned scientists and experts in a decommissioned industrial plant and discussed with them key issues that will occupy us in the coming decades and change our world. On three evenings at the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre, Alexander Thamm will report on his impressions, experiences and insights that he gathered during the production of the programmes. He will also be in dialogue with a Saxon expert or scientist as a guest of the evening and discuss the topic with reference to Saxony or the region. The 30-minute programme from the TV series will be shown before the discussion.
This series of events is a cooperation between the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre and the Saxon State Centre for Political Education as part of the "Kontrovers vor Ort" series.
On the topic of the evening (ARD-alpha): Man and nature - a trial of strength since time immemorial. But as early as the first industrial revolution, man learnt to control nature better and better. Today, the hunger for energy has driven the concentration of C02 to an all-time high. How does nature react? And what can mankind do to prevent gloomy predictions from becoming reality?

Sustainable living - an idea of Hans Carl von Carlowitz from Chemnitz
Location: TIETZ, event hall
Admission: free
Living consciously: VHS course series on the careful use of the world's resources Higher, faster, further - and more and more of everything? Humanity consumes 60 per cent more resources in a year than the earth can regenerate within this period. In short: we are exploiting the earth with our way of life and thus jeopardising the future of coming generations. We invite you to three evenings that show how we can integrate the conscious use of resources into our way of life. It is about suggestions for practical solutions, not about forcing us to do without. It is about a new quality (of life).
"Cut only as much wood as can grow back!" These words by Hans Carl von Carlowitz are more than 300 years old - and they are more relevant than ever for our times. They describe an important basic principle: "No more than ..." In view of today's overexploitation of raw materials and excessive consumption of energy, these words have become (super)vital for our entire planet. In his lecture, Dr oec. habil. Dieter Füßlein will explain where the idea of sustainability comes from and what exactly it entails. He will also discuss how sustainability can be implemented in everyday life today and what the most urgent requirements of (global) society are in order to truly anchor sustainability. Dr oec. habil. Dieter Füßlein is Chairman of the Board of the Sächsische Carlowitz Gesellschaft e. V.

Where does tolerance reach its limits? Lecture and discussion about a fundamental democratic value
Venue: TIETZ, Room 4.07
Admission: free
Tolerant interaction between people is an important fundamental value of a democratic society. Tolerance proves to be a valuable buffer for social peace in the short term. In the long term, however, too much tolerance can also exacerbate problems, lead to an inability to act and to disenchantment with politics. In the lecture, the speakers will explore the role of tolerance in the personal environment and in society. They will look at where the limits of individual and social tolerance lie and what causes them. The concept of tolerance will be placed in a general scheme of opinion, behaviour and reaction. In the discussion with the participants, further questions are addressed using concrete and current examples, such as How do we deal with dissenters, how do we deal with extremists? What style of communication does tolerance require? How much openness can our democracy cope with, and what threatens it?
This event is a cooperation between the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre and the Saxon State Centre for Political Education as part of the "Kontrovers vor Ort" series.
