Café Philo: "The future will be bright"

Venue: Weltecho, Annaberger Straße 24
Admission: free

For us modern people, the future is perhaps the most important dimension of time. We live out of expectations, hopes and risk calculations, fuelled by a belief in progress. We hope that the future will somehow be better than the present. This distinguishes us from people who lived and still live in traditional societies - with the conviction that the world will remain the same. However, there are increasing signs that our optimism could be deceptive. The capitalist economic system is running into difficulties, poverty and conflicts are not being overcome and climate change is becoming a global threat. This means that the
positive concept and the optimistic idea of the future have been shaken. This is reason enough to address the topic at Café Philo and enter into dialogue with you.

Wednesday, 6 November, 7 to 8.30 p.m.

In this event, you will receive comprehensive basic information from us, e.g. about the situation of the children and the requirements that foster parents need. We will introduce you to family sponsorship and various forms of foster care. You will be informed about the application procedure of the Office for Youth and Family Affairs. We will also be happy to answer any questions you may have. We look forward to seeing you!

Democracy for tomorrow. Roadmap to save the world - with a concrete blueprint for a just Europe

Venue: TIETZ, event hall
Admission: free

What kind of democracy do we need to master the major challenges of the 21st century?
Century? How can the 300-year-old model of democracy be modernised and further developed? How can we succeed in limiting the (over)power of international corporations, the consequences of climate change, the dominance of conflicts and growing social inequality worldwide? In his book, Karl-Martin Hentschel presents an analysis of human society. However, he does not stop there, but uses his many years of political experience to derive a concept for a new, future democracy that could ensure harmonious and environmentally friendly coexistence. He shows: There are already solutions to many current challenges that work on a small scale and need to be put on a broader footing with political will.

Karl-Martin Hentschel was a member of the Schleswig-Holstein state parliament until 2009. He is a member of the federal board of Mehr Demokratie e. V. and represents Attac on the board of the Tax Justice Network. Karl-Martin Hentschel would like to discuss his theses with the audience - therefore the event will not be a book reading, but a dialogue on the central theses of the book.

This event is a co-operation between weiterdenken - Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Sachsen and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

Waste avoidance in practice - good ideas to copy!

Location: TIETZ, event hall
Fee: free

The best waste is waste that is not produced in the first place! Nevertheless, it is unavoidable that the use and consumption of things leaves waste that then has to be disposed of. Waste avoidance is an important principle on the way to a circular economy in order to conserve resources and protect the environment. This workshop will focus on concrete ideas and approaches to waste prevention in consumption, which will show that everyone can do something: Everyone can do something.

Various Chemnitz stakeholders and projects will be presenting creative and practical approaches to waste prevention and sensible reuse and recycling.

All interested citizens are cordially invited to contribute their questions, ideas and suggestions.

This event is a cooperation between the Chemnitz Environmental Centre and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre. It is taking place as part of the European Week for Waste Prevention 2019.

Nutrition for children

Thursday, 21 November, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The divided republic - Does right-wing populism threaten social cohesion?

Location: TIETZ, course room 4.07
Free admission

Our society is drifting apart - at least that is the feeling of many people and sometimes also the way it is portrayed in the media. When it comes to topics such as migration and integration, opposing points of view are hardening: objective debates with those who think differently rarely succeed. Attacks on the democratic system, on public media and on diversity as the basis of our coexistence are on the rise. The success of populist parties can be seen as an expression of a longing for simple truths. The event will address fundamental questions: What is the current state of cohesion in our society? What are the social and cultural reasons for the success of right-wing populists? How should the results of the 2019 elections be assessed in this context? How can we as a society, but also as individuals, contribute to greater cohesion?

The event will be broadcast as a livestream from the Eschweiler Adult Education Centre. It is part of the "Smart Democracy" project organised by the German Adult Education Association.

And this is how you can take part:
You come to the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre and watch the live broadcast together with other participants. We will pass on your questions to the experts via an online platform. After the end of the broadcast, there will be an opportunity for further discussion on site.
