Events at Chemnitz Adult Education Centre in January 2020
Tuesday, 7 January 2020, 7 to 9.15 p.m.
Café Philo: "The future will be bright"
Location: Lessing & Kompanie bookshop. Franz-Mehring-Straße 8
Admission: free
For us modern people, the future is perhaps the most important dimension of time. We live out of expectations, hopes and risk calculations, fuelled by a belief in progress. We hope that the future will somehow be better than the present. This distinguishes us from people who have lived and continue to live in traditional societies - with the conviction that the world will remain the same. However, there are increasing signs that our optimism could be deceptive. The capitalist economic system is running into difficulties, poverty and conflicts are not being overcome, climate change is becoming a global threat. This has shaken our positive outlook and optimistic vision of the future. This is reason enough to address the topic at Café Philo and enter into dialogue with you.

Staging, retouching, manipulation - Do images tell the truth?
Location: TIETZ, Room 4.07
Admission: free
The images we see in the media are not always a truthful representation of reality. This evening will use numerous examples from the media to show how images can be altered through staging, retouching and manipulation. We will explore these questions: How is an image statement influenced by staging, e.g. by means of image cropping or a different perspective? How are images "prettied up" or retouched using image editing programmes? How are image statements completely changed through manipulation, e.g. to spread other political or social messages? How and when are means such as framing, adding text and changing colours used?
After this evening, you will be able to scrutinise images in the media more critically and see them with different eyes!
This event is a cooperation between SAEK Chemnitz and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.
Tuesday, 14 January 2020, 6.45 to 8.15 p.m.

Darknet - drugs, weapons and political utopias in the digital underworld
Location: TIETZ, event hall
Admission: free
The darknet is full of contradictions: the digital underworld is a highly professional
"shopping mile" for drugs. Paedophiles abuse the anonymity to exchange child pornography. Political activists use the darknet to protect themselves from surveillance. The media offer hyper-anonymous mailboxes for potential whistleblowers. In his lecture, journalist and author Stefan Mey will shed light on what the darknet is, how anonymisation works and what exciting and problematic content can be found on the darknet. The discussion with the audience
audience could also centre on this question: Is the darknet a politically important counter-concept to today's perfectly monitorable internet?
After the event, you will look at the darknet and the "normal" Internet differently.
Internet.
This event is a cooperation between the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

Children imitate what they see adults do. This also applies to food. So children need role models - but how can this be achieved? How do parents perceive them and what support do they want for their children? And what is important to the children and young people concerned themselves when it comes to assistance? Seeing with hands and ears
Location: TIETZ, course room 4.19
Admission: free
Do you have any idea how blind people "see" the world? How do they orientate themselves in everyday life without the help of others? What aids and tricks are useful? What does the clock have to do with eating?
After a more theoretical part, you can try your hand at small practical exercises: For example, you can eat a few small bites with a blindfold on, count money with your eyes closed or climb stairs with a cane. If you are curious and want to learn more about the everyday life of blind and visually impaired people, this course offers you the opportunity to do so!
Thursday, 23 January 2020, 7 to 8.30 p.m.
Violence in couple relationships - lecture and discussion
Location: TIETZ, event hall
Admission: free
Violence in couple relationships is now seen as a serious threat. Violence in couple relationships is a form of violence that is usually generally referred to as an
usually labelled as an "abusive relationship" and reduced to physical violence.
Extended legal reforms and improved intervention and counselling options are increasingly helping to protect those affected.
New research provides information on the extent to which people are affected and the health and social risks associated with violence in couple relationships and gives a differentiated picture of the topic.
Children in families in which the mother is abused by the father or violence occurs between the parents are also affected by this violence in many ways. They witness the abuse, which should also be seen as a form of violence. Children go on the run, are present during police operations and bear all the consequences that violence entails. Their healthy development can be impaired by witnessing violence. They need appropriate support and guidance.
The lecture by sociologist and social scientist Prof Dr Barbara Kavemann will provide an overview of the current state of knowledge. It is intended to help promote good practice and encourage civil courage.
This event is a co-operation between the Agricolaforum, the Chair of Intercultural Communication at Chemnitz University of Technology and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.
