European Energy Award in Gold presented to Chemnitz

City honoured again for climate protection

On Monday, 4 November 2019, Mayor Miko Runkel received the European Energy Award in Gold for Chemnitz at the 12th Annual Conference of the Municipal Energy Dialogue Saxony in Dresden. The award recognises the city's successful climate protection policy.

Various specialist departments, municipal companies, chambers, clubs and associations work closely together in the city's energy team. There is also intensive co-operation with Chemnitz University of Technology. Projects are planned and implemented jointly.

The energy neighbourhood concept for the Brühl district and the expansion of the low-temperature district heating network have resulted in renewed certification. The integration of a solar thermal system into the district heating network and additional storage options are expected to reduce CO2 emissions in the district by around 42 per cent by 2020. The partners in the energy team are also working together to realise the phase-out of lignite as quickly as possible and to expand local public transport.

Since its first certification with the European Energy Award in 2011, the city of Chemnitz has increased its climate protection efforts enormously. In 2015, it received the award in gold for the first time and has now been honoured with the award in gold for the second time following a review by external auditors. With 82.7 per cent of the possible points, Chemnitz has once again improved significantly compared to 2015.

Miko Runkel, Mayor of the Department of Law, Safety and Environmental Protection, commented:
"The eea process has been pointing us in the right direction in climate protection for years.
We know that we still have a long way to go and that the aim must be continuous improvement. In order to make an independent and continuous contribution to the global
goals, we also need to set the right course, which we have already done at local authority level. The path we have chosen will help us to tackle solutions for an environmentally conscious and sustainable future in Chemnitz with answers from experts."

The European Energy Award is a European certification procedure for municipal climate protection policy. All of the city's energy-relevant activities are systematically recorded and evaluated in six fields of action. The areas are energy-efficient urban development, municipal building management, supply and disposal, mobility as well as communication and co-operation with other partners.
