Dogs in the zoo - trial phase starts on 15 June
From Monday 15 June, visitors to Chemnitz Zoo will have the opportunity to take their dog into the zoo. This is a trial phase until the end of the year for the time being, which should show whether it is compatible for the zoo animals on the one hand and for people and dogs on the other to have dogs in the zoo. Previously, this was only possible in the wildlife enclosure.
Although dogs are allowed in other zoological facilities, this is not without risk. Dogs are domesticated predators that are instinctively recognised as such by zoo animals and are also feared by many. Despite a certain degree of familiarisation, this can lead to stress. The dog owner must therefore ensure that the dog does not harass zoo and wild animals - and of course visitors and other dogs - and behaves calmly.
The transmission of diseases is also a risk factor. It is therefore important that dogs taken to the zoo have the usual necessary vaccinations. Responsible dog owners should also be aware that a visit to the zoo can also be stressful for their own dog, both because of the zoo animals and because of other excited dogs and lots of people in a confined space. It should also be a matter of course to clean up after your dog.
The entrance fee is 1.50 euros per dog. Dog owners receive the necessary dog waste bag and an information sheet with the rules for visiting the zoo with a dog at the ticket office. These rules can also be found in detail on the zoo's homepage.
Please note:
- Only one dog per adult visitor is allowed.
- Dogs are not allowed in the animal houses, walk-through enclosures or playgrounds.
- Dogs must always be kept on a short lead and supervised and must not be allowed on or behind barriers.
