There he founded the Korona Piano Trio with fellow students, with whom he performed at the Banff Festival and elsewhere.

After numerous masterclasses with renowned cellists, he completed his studies at the University of Music in Trossingen. This was followed by a busy chamber music career at home and abroad. His wife's engagement as a soprano at the Chemnitz Opera brought them both to Chemnitz in 1992. Matthias Gagelmann has been principal cellist of the Leipzig Symphony Orchestra (LSO) since 1993. In addition to the LSO, he has also performed as a soloist with numerous other orchestras. He was appointed chamber virtuoso in 2013.
