Consumption under the sign of the coronavirus - online lecture by the adult education centre

The Chemnitz Adult Education Centre invites you to a highly topical subject on Tuesday, 2 June, from 7.30 to 9 pm. The focus will be on people's consumer behaviour in the present day, but also looking back to past times. Conventional views of shopping will be scrutinised and the role of the state and civil society will be examined - in the face of abundance, climate change, turbo capitalism and the coronavirus crisis.

What we consume has become a defining aspect of modern life. We define ourselves through possessions. And our increasingly lavish lifestyle has enormous consequences for the earth. How did it come about that we now live with such a large amount of things? And how has this changed the course of history? How will the coronavirus crisis affect our consumption?

The evening's speaker, Frank Trentmann, is Professor of History at Birkbeck College, University of London. He studied and completed his doctorate at Harvard University and then taught at Princeton. He received the Humboldt Research Award in 2017.

The lecture will be broadcast as a livestream and participants can join the discussion via a live chat.

Registration is possible by email or online until midnight on 1 June . Participation is free of charge. Link to registration:
