Completion of LED modernisation at traffic lights

Next Monday, 29 April 2019, the stationary traffic lights on Leipziger/Wildparkstraße will be put back into operation after extensive refurbishment. The modernisation measure, which cost around 200,000 euros, also includes the installation of modern LED signal heads. This means that the traditional incandescent light bulb is also being phased out of the Chemnitz cityscape at the last set of traffic lights.

The complete switch to LED technology offers a number of advantages. For example, the significantly improved recognisability of the traffic light contributes to greater road safety. However, ecological and economic criteria such as the reduction in energy consumption and maintenance costs also play an important role.

As a result of the LED modernisations, annual energy consumption has been reduced by around a third in recent years from 781,000 kWh (as at 2012) to the current figure of 527,000 kWh (as at 2018). This corresponds to a CO2 saving of around 150 tonnes.
