Climate hike in the Zeisigwald forest
On Thursday, 13 June at 4 pm, there will be a botanical-zoological forest walk in the Zeisigwald. The meeting point is at the Zeisigwaldschänke. Together with experts from the Parks Department, representatives of environmental organisations and the Agenda 21 ecology working group, the focus will be on the effects of climate change on the plants and animals in Chemnitz's forests. Participation is free of charge.
The extinction of species continues in Germany. Every second bird species, a large proportion of insects, a third of our fungi and 30 per cent of flowering plants are endangered or extinct. Climate change also plays an important role here. The excursion will focus on the effects of the previous year's drought as well as snow and wind breaks and discuss the possibilities of future forest management.
Interested parties are cordially invited.
Background:
At 500 hectares, the Zeisigwald is the largest forest area in the city. In the middle of the forest there are very different biotope landscapes, some of which are protected for geological and ecological reasons. Parts of the forest have been withdrawn from management as reference areas as part of the FSC certification since 2002. In addition to recreation, the Zeisigwald forest is of great importance for nature conservation and climate protection.
