City of Chemnitz takes part in the Climate Alliance's "City Cycling" campaign

The city of Chemnitz will be taking part in the nationwide "City Cycling" campaign from 2020. This was decided by the city council today. The campaign raises awareness among citizens about the use of bicycles in everyday life and brings the topics of bicycle use and bicycle traffic planning more strongly into the municipal parliaments. The importance of cycling for climate protection and quality of life as well as people's own mobility behaviour is to be brought to the fore. Since the start of the campaign in 2008, the number of participating municipalities has risen from 23 to 1,057.

The campaign is designed as a competition in which the participating cities, municipalities and districts collect as many cycle kilometres as possible on 21 consecutive days (freely selectable between 1 May and 30 September) and record them via an online tool or the "Stadtradeln" app. It is therefore important to get as many participants as possible.

Walking and cycling are at the heart of sustainable mobility and characterise the urbanity and vibrancy of the city. A high degree of flexibility in mobility is achieved in particular through the simple link with local public transport. This is precisely where the "City Cycling" campaign comes in - in everyday mobility behaviour. Participants in the campaign change their perspective and experience their everyday life by bike over the three-week campaign period.

Chemnitz is to become a bicycle-friendly city - that is the declared aim of local politics. In April, the Chemnitz City Council decided to update the cycling concept, which has been in place since 2013, by 2021. The proportion of journeys made by bike in the city is to be significantly increased from the current 4 per cent by 2020.
