City of Chemnitz honours city councillors who were victims of National Socialism with memorial plaque

Ceremony on 27 January, 4 p.m., Town Hall, Wandelhalle

On 27 January, the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, a commemorative plaque for city councillors who were victims of National Socialism between 1933 and 1945 will be unveiled during a ceremony in the lobby of the New Town Hall at 4 pm.

The memorial plaque bears the names of ten city councillors from that period. The 30 x 50 cm plaque made of antique brass will be located in the Wandelhalle, close to where the former city councillors worked.

In March 2019, the city council passed a resolution to enable a dignified commemoration of the city councillors who were murdered during the National Socialist era, were killed in concentration camps or died as a result of imprisonment. The city archives had then identified the councillors in various historical sources.

On the morning of 27 January at 10 a.m., the City of Chemnitz will hold its traditional commemoration ceremony in the Park of the Victims of Fascism. This year, pupils from the Agricola-Gymnasium will once again be part of the programme.

Note: Representatives of the media are cordially invited to both events.

Note: In an earlier version of this press release, the term "city councillors" was used. However, the historically correct term is "city councillors". We have corrected the text accordingly.
