City health department informs about tuberculosis case
Child in daycare centre affected - parents are informed about further measures
A child at the "Zwergenhaus" daycare centre (Neukirchner Straße) has contracted tuberculosis. For this reason, the public health department, in cooperation with the youth welfare office, has initiated initial measures to clarify whether other people may have been infected. The child was recently diagnosed with the disease and is currently being treated in hospital.
The public health department is informing the parents with a notice and inviting them to a parents' evening at the beginning of next week. The further measures, i.e. the planned examinations, will be presented there and questions will be answered. Around 95 children in five groups are looked after by 15 teachers at the daycare centre. The daycare centre will remain open as normal.
Keyword tuberculosis / questions and information
Tuberculosis is a notifiable infectious disease that was diagnosed around 6000 times in Germany last year.
The disease is primarily transmitted through the air, affecting the lungs in most patients. Symptoms of tuberculosis can include a cough lasting several weeks, night sweats, mild fever, general weakness and unclear weight loss.
The disease does not actually break out in all patients who are infected with tuberculosis. The pathogens often remain in the body without symptoms. Outbreaks are most likely to occur in immunocompromised people and small children.
