City council decides on building construction measures

The Chemnitz City Council has launched a series of building construction projects.

New secondary school on Hartmannplatz
The city of Chemnitz is planning the construction of a new four-form secondary school at Richard-Hartmann-Platz with recreational and sports areas. In June 2018, the winning design of the realisation competition was chosen by the architectural firm Code Unique Architekten from Dresden. The secondary school comprises grades 5 to 10 and therefore has capacity for 672 pupils. The new building is designed to enable inclusive schooling. Preparatory work is currently underway and construction of the school building is scheduled to begin in March 2020. 32.6 million will be invested in the new school building in the city centre, with pupils due to move in at the start of the 2022/23 school year. Over 20 million euros have been applied for as funding.

Refurbishment and extension of Georg Weerth secondary school
The refurbishment of Georg-Weerth-Oberschule is planned as a three-form secondary school. An extension to the existing school building is necessary for this increase in capacity. The measure follows on from construction work carried out in 2014/15, during which the sanitary facilities, parts of the heating system and the building envelope were renovated. The remaining rooms are now being refurbished, including the wooden beam ceilings, floors and interior doors, painting work and acoustic measures. Some of the rooms will be reorganised, a lift will be installed and the connection to the new extension will be established. In addition, fire protection, safety, thermal and sound insulation requirements will be brought up to date. Around six million euros will be invested in the secondary school by the end of 2021. Of this, over 4.5 million euros in funding has been applied for.

The refurbishment of the gymnasium is also currently being planned. This is the subject of a separate construction decision.

Sports hall at the Chemnitz school model
The Chemnitz School Model sports hall was built in 1972/73. The parquet flooring in the sports hall was replaced with a sports floor in 2000. The sports hall was also given a baffle wall covering. The sanitary facilities were partially renovated, but not built or remodelled to be barrier-free. All other components and the technical equipment date back to 1972/73, including the heating system. The hall's foundation, which was built on a gravel pad, is also in need of renovation. The construction project, which is due to be completed by the end of the 2021 summer holidays and will cost around 1.7 million euros (900,000 euros of which is subsidised), is intended to rectify the deficits. Among other things, the façade including external insulation and the roof will be renewed, windows and external doors will be replaced and accessibility will also be created. The sanitary facilities, building services, heating and electrical installations will also be modernised. Once the construction work is complete, the outdoor facilities will also be restored.

Augsburger Straße 36 daycare centre: conversion into an after-school care centre
The Augsburger Straße 36 daycare centre is to be converted into an after-school care centre. The building is currently still being used as a childcare centre. The refurbishment of Heinrich Heine Primary School will take place between September 2019 and August 2021. The conversion of Augsburger Straße 36 into an after-school care centre should also be completed by the time the school withdraws and will then accommodate 238 after-school places for the four-form entry school. Once the renovation work has been completed, probably in mid-2020, the conversion work can begin and must be completed by the time the after-school care centre moves out. Around 646,000 euros will be invested, including around 80,000 euros in funding.
