Chemnitz visit to Düsseldorf

Invitation to the photo session: 2 October, 7.45 a.m., Stand 10 of the bus station

On Friday, 2 October, 30 people from Chemnitz will make their way to Düsseldorf to attend the celebrations marking 30 years of reunification. There they will get to know the twin city until Sunday. Representatives of the media are cordially invited to a photo opportunity on Friday at the departure, 7.45 am, at stand 10 of the bus station.

Last year, to mark 30 years of the Peaceful Revolution, a special citizens' encounter was launched - the 30/30 project: in November 2019, 30 Düsseldorfers who had never been to Chemnitz before were invited to visit the city in order to develop an understanding of the differences in their respective life stories, but above all of what they have in common. During their three-day trip, they also met the 30 Chemnitz residents who are now paying a return visit to the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia after 30 years of German reunification.

Düsseldorf has put together an interesting programme for the Chemnitz residents' stay at the beginning of October: Together, they will take part in a discussion event at Heinrich Heine University, explore the city and visit the Museum Kunstpalast. A guided tour of Düsseldorf's Little Tokyo is also planned. The state capital is home to Germany's largest Japanese community. More than 8,000 Japanese live there.

During a visit to the Düsseldorf theatre, the 30 Chemnitz residents will experience the "Speech on the 30th Anniversary of German Unity" with former Federal Minister Gerhart Baum.

Chemnitz and Düsseldorf have been twinned since 1988. The continuous and regular support from Düsseldorf, especially in the area of information and personnel exchange, was a great help in establishing the Chemnitz city administration after 1990. The award of honorary citizenship to the former Lord Mayor of Düsseldorf, Klaus Bungert, was an expression of the City of Chemnitz's gratitude for the support provided by the City of Düsseldorf. Since then, countless personal relationships have developed between the people of the two cities. There are mutual invitations and encounters not only at civic associations and festivals. Sport, art, environmental commitment and much more are constantly giving rise to new contacts.

Tram christening

On Thursday, 1 October, Mayor of Construction Michael Stötzer will christen a tram with the name "Düsseldorf" on the occasion of the Chemnitz delegation's visit to the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia. Further information is available from CVAG.
