On Friday 17 July at 7.30 am, Mayor Sven Schulze will hand over two class sets of new tablets to the pupils of Chemnitz Sports High School, Reichenhainer Str. 210.
Representatives of the media are cordially invited to this event. Important note: Visitors are required to wear a face mask in the school building.
A total of almost 200 mobile devices are to be set up and handed over to Chemnitz schools by the start of the new school year. The first to benefit from the new technology will be the Glösa primary school and the Altchemnitz special school, in addition to the sports high school.
The purchase of the devices was made possible by additional funding from the federal government. Mayor Sven Schulze: "At the beginning of June, we were informed that the city of Chemnitz would receive around 1.5 million euros in additional earmarked federal funding from the Free State of Saxony as part of the digital pact for the technical equipment of schools. As a result, we decided to equip these three schools with two class sets each in the short term in order to test the new technology."
The special profile of the school played a decisive role in the decision to use the tablets at Chemnitz Sports High School first. Headteacher Steffen Kamprad: "I am delighted that the city of Chemnitz is one of the first to equip our school with tablets. With the new technology, our pupils now have the opportunity to follow lessons, for example, even at training camps."
Background:
In connection with the management of the coronavirus pandemic, the federal and state governments have agreed to provide additional funds totalling 500 million euros to supplement the "Digital Pact for Schools 2019 to 2024". For Saxony, €25 million of this is available for the procurement of digital end devices and the necessary software by the school authorities. Procurement will be carried out via framework contract partners and the Zweckverband Kommunale Informationsverarbeitung Sachsen, of which the city of Chemnitz is a member. Costs totalling around 87,000 euros were incurred for the initial equipment of the three schools with mobile devices, which could be fully financed from the additional funding. In addition, 70,000 euros were spent on WLAN and switch technology. The remaining funding from the additional federal programme is to be spent in full on the procurement of end devices and software this year.
The application for the overall package of the digital pact in Chemnitz until 2024, which is to be considered separately from the additional funding provided in connection with coronavirus and comprises a total volume of €12,536,247.71 for Chemnitz schools, was submitted to the funding provider on 17 June 2020. The decision is expected shortly.
In order to be able to centrally manage the large number of mobile devices to be procured, the city of Chemnitz will set up a mobile device management system by the new school year. The Free State of Saxony has already promised funding for this project as well.
