Chemnitz city council trains educators

Model project for the creation of apprenticeships from 2020

At its meeting today, Chemnitz City Council decided that the city of Chemnitz will train state-recognised nursery teachers from 2020. The pilot project is an early response to bottlenecks and developments in this area.

According to a forecast by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, there will be a shortage of around 199,000 nursery teachers across Germany by 2030. The city of Chemnitz will also have a high demand for nursery teachers in the coming years due to age-related retirements in municipal daycare centres. In addition, further new facilities will be built in the coming years, which will require additional qualified staff.

Mayor Sven Schulze emphasises: "With this pilot project, we are taking an important first step towards meeting the staffing requirements in the municipal daycare centres. Further efforts will have to follow."

Ten nursery teachers are expected to be trained in the city administration from August 2020. This will take the form of practice-integrated training in cooperation with the independent organisations in the city of Chemnitz. A separate class with a total of 20 trainees will be formed at the Vocational School Centre for Health and Social Services in Chemnitz, ten of whom will be from the city administration and ten from the independent providers.

The advertisement for the training programme and all further information can be found at www.chemnitz.de/ausbildung.

The decision on the selection of applicants is made in co-operation with the technical college. The practical training is carried out in suitable practical facilities of the city administration by appropriately qualified practical instructors. During the training, the trainees of the city administration pass through the areas of crèche, kindergarten and after-school care. They receive a monthly training allowance in accordance with TVAöD-Pflege. No school fees are charged for the school-based training programme. The training programme lasts a total of four years.
