Award of the Chemnitz Peace Prize 2020
Proposals can be submitted until 15 January 2020
This is the 17th time that the Chemnitz Peace Prize - a civil society prize in which the citizens of the city select the winners from among themselves - has been awarded. The award ceremony takes place in the context of the Chemnitz Peace Day, which commemorates the destruction of the city of Chemnitz on 5 March 1945 as a result of Germany's inhumane, hostile policies and the war it started.
History must not be allowed to repeat itself and for this we need the commitment of everyone.
The award is given to individuals, organisations, projects and initiatives that
- stand up for fundamental values such as tolerance and democracy,
- consider the integration of different cultures to be an essential part of our coexistence,
- take a stand against all forms of marginalisation, xenophobia and racism,
- carry out active peace work,
- promote and support non-violent coexistence.
It is about civic, voluntary commitment in addition to the organisations whose main task it is to ensure social peace in Chemnitz.
For the organisers, the citizens' association FUER CHEMNITZ e.V. and the migration officer of the city of Chemnitz, it is important that this commitment is sustainable.
The Chemnitz Peace Prize is endowed with 500 euros for the 1st prize, 300 euros for the 2nd prize and 200 euros for the 3rd prize.
The winners of the 1st prize and the occasional prize of honour for special services to peace in the city also receive a sculpture by sculptor Erik Neukirchner.
There is an innovation for 2020: for the first time, a new category will be awarded alongside the Chemnitz Peace Prize, a prize for children and young people and their projects, which is endowed with 300 euros.
All Chemnitz residents, associations and initiatives are hereby invited to nominate suitable people and projects. Self-applications are also possible. Members of the jury will examine the proposals, visit them and present them to the jury.
The closing date for applications is 15 January 2020.
