Agricola's books

Exhibition opening and lectures for the AGRICOLA TALK 2019

On Saturday, 6 July at 10 a.m., the exhibition "Agricola's Books" will open in the Central Library in the TIETZ to mark the 150th anniversary of Chemnitz City Library. The cabinet exhibition can be viewed until 3 August.

The opening is also the 28th AGRICOLA-GESPRÄCH, a colloquium on the subject of Agricola's books, jointly organised by the Agricola Research Centre Chemnitz, Chemnitz City Library and Chemnitz University Library. (Programme on p.2)

The Chemnitz City Library is presenting Georgius Agricola's main work "De re metallica" both in the original edition from 1556 and in later editions. Other early prints from the 16th century are also on display, primarily by the authors that Agricola used for his extensive studies and whom he named in the lists of authors at the beginning of his books. In addition, there are writings by his teachers, co-workers and friends as well as works that demonstrate Agricola's fame among his contemporaries.

As a Renaissance scholar, Georgius Agricola dealt with a wide variety of subjects such as education/philology, history, metrology, medicine, zoology, geology, mineralogy and mining and metallurgy, on which he left behind numerous works. Above all, Agricola wrote himself into the annals of scientific history as the founder of the mining sciences. He was also interested in political issues and, as mayor, steered the fortunes of our town in difficult times.
