Thursday, 1 October, 7 to 8.30 p.m.
A look behind the facades of the district court
Venue: TIETZ, Neue Sächsische Galerie
Admission: free

The independent administration of justice is a precious asset of democracy. Courts serve to implement the law. In Germany, there are different types of courts and different instances, i.e. hierarchical levels of jurisdiction.

This course will provide a brief overview of the various jurisdictions, their structure and jurisdiction. The focus will be on criminal law, as this is the area that attracts the most interest from the press and the public. The position of lay assessors in criminal proceedings will therefore be discussed in particular. The most important procedures of criminal proceedings will also be outlined. In addition, the work of professional judges and lay assessors is explained up until the judgement is reached.

The course is well suited to preparing participants for a role as a spectator or lay assessor. They will learn how to find out about trials taking place and also about the election of lay assessors.

This event is a co-operation between the Chemnitz District Court and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

Thursday, 8 October, 6.45 p.m. to 8.15 p.m.
The power of the weak
Location: TIETZ, course room 4.07
Admission: free

The documentary film, which was made in Cuba in 2014, portrays Jorge Jérez Beliasario, or Jorgito for short. He was born with a severe physical disability. From birth, Jorgito and his family received support from the Cuban education and healthcare system. Thanks to this solidarity and his willpower, Jorgito developed amazingly against all the odds. As a schoolboy, he therefore decides to give something back to his country and its people out of gratitude for the support he has received.

Tobias Kriele's film traces Jorgito's journey and how he deals with his fate. The film also provides insights into Cuba today, in particular into the ideas of education and inclusion of people with disabilities there.

Following the film (52 minutes, Spanish with German subtitles), there will be an opportunity to talk to the filmmaker Tobias Kriele.

This event is a co-operation of the Cuba Sí - Regional Group Chemnitz and the Adult Education Centre Chemnitz.

Thursday, 15 October, 7 to 8.30 pm
Book presentation: "Ständige Ausreise. Difficult ways out of the GDR"
Venue: TIETZ, event hall
Admission: free

Anyone who submitted a so-called "departure application" in the GDR and thus applied for "release from GDR citizenship" had to expect harassment. People were also sometimes called traitors and egotists by colleagues, neighbours and even their own families. By 1989, almost 400,000 people had left the GDR by applying for "permanent emigration" because they did not want to risk their lives trying to escape. Many waited a long time to actually be allowed to leave the country.
In the anthology "Ständige Ausreise. Difficult ways out of the GDR", journalists from all over Germany have compiled 24 stories. They tell of the motives for leaving the GDR. How did people live in the time between submitting an application and leaving the country, when it was better not to fall in love, when they were sitting on packed suitcases for months or years? The editors Jana Göbel and Matthias Meisner invite you to read and talk on this evening.

This event is a co-operation between Weiterdenken - Heinrich Böll Foundation Saxony and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

Friday, 16 October, 7 to 8.30 pm
The Treuhand and the economic upheavals in East Germany after 1990
Venue: Haus der Gewerkschaften, Augustusburger Straße 33, hall on the ground floor
Admission: free

The Treuhandanstalt was supposed to transfer the "state-owned" companies of the GDR into a market economy. This amounted to a reorganisation of assets on an unprecedented scale. Sales to mostly West German investors, the liquidation of entire industries and mass redundancies characterised the early 1990s. They were accompanied by furious protests and political controversies. The lecture and discussion will shed light on the economic upheavals of the time by looking at the Treuhand.

This event is a co-operation between the Evangelisches Forum Sachsen and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

Thursday, 22 October, 5 to 6.30 pm
