30 years of German unity: Christoph Magirius and Hartwig Albiro talk about the events of 1989 and 1990
3 October 2020, 3 pm, Luxor Chemnitz, Great Hall - Accompanying exhibition in the town hall
Christoph Magirius was superintendent in Chemnitz from 1979 to 1990. For more than a decade, Magirius was a negotiating partner between state power and the church. In the late summer and autumn of 1989, he and many other men and women campaigned for mutual respect and tolerance, for the renunciation of violence in dialogue and action. He was one of the organisers of the "Round Table" in Chemnitz. On 3 October 1990, Christoph Magirius was made an honorary citizen of the city of Chemnitz.
Hartwig Albiro was theatre director at Chemnitz Theatre from 1971 to 1997. On the evening of 7 October 1989, the 40th anniversary of the GDR, he read out a resolution from the theatre staff after a performance, calling for a democratic renewal of the GDR. In the weeks and months that followed, he continued to be one of the most important voices in Chemnitz in favour of change in the GDR.
In conversation with Ronny Schilder, Freie Presse Chemnitz, Christoph Magirius and Hartwig Albiro will talk about the events of 1989 and 1990 and their significance 30 years later.
The event is open to the public. Admission is free. Due to the current hygiene and social distancing regulations, a maximum of 150 people can attend. All visitors must leave their contact details at the entrance. Wearing a face mask is recommended. The minimum distance must be observed.
Exhibition: "From the Peaceful Revolution to German Unity - Documents from 1989 and 1990"
