On Saturday 8 September, the new sports middle school building will be officially opened. After two years of construction, the building now offers pupils in the sports school centre ideal conditions for sporting and academic achievements. Media representatives are cordially invited to attend the opening of the new secondary sports school at Reichenhainer Straße 206.
Mayor Barbara Ludwig will welcome the guests at 10 am. State Minister Brunhild Kurth will then give a welcoming address. The planning office Obermeyer Albis-Bauplan will go into more detail about the building project. Finally, the headmaster of the sports centre, Mr Torsten Kulakow, will invite everyone to an open day.
Sports school centre with grammar school and secondary school
In 2001, the city council decided to establish a sports school centre in the Sportforum area in order to improve the teaching and training conditions for both sports schools and to promote young talent and competitive sport. Firstly, the sports high school was completely refurbished between 2002 and 2004. The costs of this construction phase totalled 5.3 million euros, of which 3.7 million euros were grants. A further step was taken in 2008 when the decision to carry out the building work was confirmed. The city council decided to build a new three-court sports hall, a new connector with kitchen and multi-purpose room as well as the new secondary school building on Reichenhainer Straße. The sports hall and connecting wing were finally inaugurated in May 2010.
Construction work on the new school began in September 2010. After two years of construction, the sports middle school is now complete.
The costs for the construction of the three-court sports hall, the connecting wing and the secondary school building totalled 15.4 million euros. 6.2 million euros were financed by subsidies, i.e. ERDF and state funds. The city of Chemnitz contributed 9.2 million euros of its own funds.
Modern facilities
The secondary sports school has modern facilities. As part of the directive of the Saxon State Ministry of Culture to promote the sustainable use of information and communication technologies in schools and media education centres in the Free State of Saxony, an extremely innovative educational concept can be implemented thanks to the school's special commitment. The secondary sports school received 20 permanently installed and 2 transportable interactive whiteboards, each with an ultra-short-throw projector, as well as 44 notebooks worth €117,000. Funding of 74 per cent was provided for this. The City of Chemnitz's own contribution to this project totalled around €30,000.
