Safe routes to school
Information from the AG Schulwegsicherung at the start of the school year
Improving road safety on school routes is the focus of the permanent school route safety working group under the leadership of the city's civil engineering department. Together with the Chemnitz-Erzgebirge police department, traffic watch and CVAG, the school administration office, public order office and specialist departments of the civil engineering office, school headmasters, parents' councils and children examine potential hazards on the public road network, particularly on the routes to primary schools, and define measures to eliminate these hazards. The committee is also involved in drawing up and updating school route plans, which include recommendations for parents and children on how to get to school safely.
The following priorities have recently been worked on and realised by the members of the working group:
Regenbogengrundschule: 30 km/h speed limit on Emilienstraße.
Georg-Weerth-Mittelschule: crossing aids (centre islands) Fürstenstraße/Uhlandstraße.
Schloßschule: pavement construction on Draisdorfer Straße.
Glösa primary school: signage at the Dorfstraße crossing.
Albert Einstein primary school: traffic monitoring at the Max-Türpe-Straße/Markersdorfer Straße pedestrian crossing and pavement construction on Markersdorfer Straße/Albert-Köhler-Straße.
Röhrsdorf primary school: 30 km/h restriction on Chemnitzer Straße between Mozartweg and Am Strauchhof.
Einsiedel grammar school: signposting of crossing point on Einsiedler Hauptstraße.
Kirchner primary school: 30 km/h - restriction on Obere Hauptstraße/Chemnitzer Straße in the Wittgensdorf district.
The working group also worked on the following school road safety projects that are still in the planning stage:
Borna primary school: Wittgensdorfer Straße/Auerswalder Straße pavement widening (planned).
Ebersdorf primary school: new pedestrian traffic lights, new pavement and bus stop on Frankenberger Straße/Mittweidaer Straße (planned).
Kleinolbersdorf primary school: construction of pavement and bus stop on Altenhainer Dorfstr./ Am Winkel (planned).
The school route plans were also updated for Lessing Primary School, Sonnenberg Primary School, Makarenko Primary School, Euba Primary School, Schlossschule, Luxemburg Primary School and Glösa Primary School.
