Annenplatz open to traffic again
After a 15-week construction period, the redesigned Annenplatz has been reopened. During the construction work, which was carried out under the leadership of the Parks Department, damaged paving slabs on the forecourt of the Annenschule were completely renewed, the street level in this area was raised and seating was installed. Around 75 per cent of the construction project was funded by the European Social Fund ESF; a total of around €220,000 was invested.
The construction work was carried out by the company Fachcenter Garten + STL Bau GmbH from Hauptmannsgrün.
The technical acceptance of the construction work took place last Friday. In autumn 2012, four new trees (three lime trees, one maple) will be planted and around 14,000 flower bulbs planted, including snowdrops, grape hyacinths and winter aconites.
This final tree planting will be followed by a public inauguration of the new area, probably in November 2012.
For information: Annenplatz is located in the middle of the first coherent inner-city residential neighbourhood in Chemnitz, which was built on ruins after the war. The unity of form and colour of the façades and the proportions of the inner courtyards and entrance areas determine the character of the district.
