The development was carried out as a result of the constantly increasing demand for housing in the course of industrialisation.

Characteristic for Sonnenberg is the close block construction. Since the 1990s the emphasis has been on the preservation of the old building material and its reconstruction.

A landmark of Sonnenberg is the Neo-Gothic church of St Markus.
