Volgograd, the former Stalingrad, is situated on the lower course
of the Volga in South Russia.
The city with 1.2 million inhabitants spread out across a length
of 80 km on the right hand bank of the river Volga and is the
capital city of the administrative district of the same name.
The industrial structure of the city is shaped by vehicle construction,
aluminium production and the chemical industry.
The best-known internationally is the tractor factory. The city
entered history in the Battle of Stalingrad, the pivotal turning
point of the Second World War in the winter of 1942/43.
2008: the twin town agreement with Volgograd is renewed
In September 2008 the cities of Volgograd and Chemnitz celebrated
20 years of their twinning with an extensive visitor programme
on both sides. During the stay in Chemnitz of a delegation with
high-ranking representatives of the town of Volgograd, the twinning
agreement made on 6 May 1988 was renewed on 29 August 2008.
The Mayoress (Oberbürgermeisterin) Barbara Ludwig travelled
to Volgograd in September with town councils as part of the
festivities for the 20 year anniversary.
2004: Meetings among friends - Chemnitz citizens in Volgograd
In September 2004 a delegation from Chemnitz spent three eventful
days as part of German culture in the Russian twin town.
"the people of Chemnitz", Mayoress Barbara Ludwig
summed up, "were able to experience these wonderful intensive
days in the city on the Volga, and develop projects and ideas
for the continued vibrant town twinning." v
Together with the German ambassador in the Russian Federation
Dr von Ploetz, Governor Masjuta and the Volgograd Lord Mayor
Ischtschenko, politicians, commercial experts and artists paused
in silent thought in front of the "eternal flame"
on Mamayev hill, the former battle ground.
