Ústí nad Labem lies between the Ore Mountains and the Central Bohemian Uplands in the picturesque valley of the Elbe at the confluence of the Elbe and the Bílina.

It is the centre of the North Bohemian industrial and metropolitan region, a transport hub and capital of Ústí nad Labem Okres.

The harbour on the Elbe is also important for inland shipping. The industrial city is characterised by heavy industry, chemicals and the food industry as well as the electric power stations with heat generation in the west of the city. The high level of air and water pollution is decreasing more and more. The environmental regulations of the Czech state are now stricter than comparable regulations in Germany.

Usti nad Labem is the seat of the Jan Evangelist Purkyne University and thanks to its past as a free royal city it has numerous cultural and historic sights. The area surrounding the city with its numerous castles (e.g. the ruin of Střekov Castle, which dominates the Elbe Valley here), bridges and natural sights is always worth an excursion. A successful theatrical tradition and a rich cultural life form the basis for the annual Cultural Festival.

Ústí nad Labem (Czech Republic)

Ústí nad Labem is only 120 km (75 miles) south-east of Chemnitz. The geographical proximity favours the multifaceted friendly relationship, inter alia between the transport services, the the Municipal Theatres, and the hospitals but also joint work on EU projects or exchange children’s and youth exchange programmes and numerous athletic events. Větruše Castle, reconstructed by the city since 2001, has already hosted several exhibitions by artists from Chemnitz.
