For 35 years the Chemnitz Zoological Gardens have been a prime recreational regional resource. Of primary concern to the management is the conservation-preservation of species accorded semi-extinct or endanger status as the

  • The mongolian Przewalski horse
  • the Brazilian "lion monkey"
  • the Siberian Amur Tiger
 

As such the Chemnitz Zoo is actively involved in several European an International breeding programs. There are always a large number of very young animals to be observed with their mothers.

The Zoo population consits of som 1,740 animals involving 162 species living on 10 hectares/25 acres.

The new Tropical House opened 2002.

The Vivarium or Special Amphibian House - the only one of its kind in Europe is home to a population of 1,360 individuals from 90 species.

Youngsters can take their biology lessons in the new Zoo School classrooms taking theoretical book-learning into the practical sphere.

Little children most enjoy the petting Zoo. Here they may observe and stroke the tame Dwarf Goats and Cameroon Sheep and their babies from right up close.
Zoo enthusiasts can get involved by joining the "Noah´s Ark" Zoo Promotion association.

April - September 9 a.m. - 7 p.m.
March + October 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
November - February 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Last admission, one hour before closing
 
 
 

The Animal Preserve or Wildgatter

The Preserve is about 35 hectares/-about 85 acres in size and is situated in a nearby recreation area Oberrabenstein. Various varieties of deer, bughorn sheep, wild boar, and black- and wood grouse roaming freely in large enclosures. In Spring and Summer young baby animals are all about.
 
Tierpark Chemnitz
During the mating season in Fall, competing males can be observed battling for favor. During the winters amidst the romantically snowy woods thick-pelted lynx and bison may be seen. Occasionally one may even hear the wolves howl.

One of the best special attraction offered by the preserve are tours including a feeding schedule. From the blinds, you get an espacially good view of the inhabitants.
