The Chemnitz Opera House was re-opened in 1992 following several years reconstruction. The structure´s Wilhelminian era facade was retained while the interior of the auditorium and the stage were fundamentally changed.

Artistically, the opera repertory offers traditional works from a new point of view. It also continues the long Chemnitz tradition of staging Richard Wagner´s operas or music dramas.

Following successful productions of Wagner´s "Parsifal", "Tannhäuser" and "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg", which led up to the Millennium, an ambitious complete production of the entire "Ring of the Nibelungen" was staged garnering international acclaim. Operettas and musicals are also performed. High quality ballet and dance performances further enhance the entertainment offering.

Chemnitz music lovers and visitors not only enjoy the Robert Schumann Philharmonic on stage in regular symphonic concert series at the Civic hall, but also in numerous special activities such un-staged operatic works as Bellini´s Norma in concert-format. Its repertory is wide and extends from the Classicists of the First Viennese School (Haydn, Beethoven and Mozart) through the Romantic repertory of Smetana, Wagner and Mahler up to contemporary foreign and German composers as Witold Lutoslawski and Wolfgang Riehm. The orchestra is regularly heard in the pit orchestra of the Opera House.

Chemnitz legitimate theater presents a large repertory. Its ensemble prefers to play in unusual venues such as on/in experimental and backstage areas - or even the foyer rather than the House´s main stage. Drama students of the Leipzig College of Music and Theater are given a chance to broaden their experience in the Chemnitz ensemble as well as present their own projects

The Puppet Theater makes its permanent home in the CineStar movie theater where in recent years it has established itself as an independent artistic genre. Its target audience is not limited only to children as is attested to by productions of "The Magic Flute", and "A Midsummer Night´s Dream". These are works suitable for the entire family, adults as well as children.
