Not many people are aware that numerous popular and successful people were born or raised in Chemnitz or lived and worked here. In fact, the city´s reputation as a cultural center extends far beyond Germany´s boundaries.

The list of names reads like a Who´s Who of contemporary art and literature. Stefan Heym, Peter Härting, Stephan Hermlin, Kerstin Hensel, Barbara Köhler, Peter von Zahn are among the authors. And Lothar-Günther Buchheim spent his childhood in Chemnitz.

Expressionist painters like Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, the artist group surrounding Martha Schrag, or the "Carla Mosch" including Michael Morgner, Gregor-Torsten Kozik or Thomas Ranft are very prominent. Other contemporary artists include Steffen Volmer, Carsten Nicolai and Osmar Osten.
