International Children’s and Young People’s Film Festival "SCHLINGEL"

SCHLINGEL

Since 1996 the SCHLINGEL International Film Festival for Children and Young People has attracted thousands of film lovers, young and old, from Chemnitz and the surrounding area to the CineStar Cinema in the Red Tower Gallery (Galerie Roter Turm) every year in the week before the Saxon Autumn with extraordinary, brand-new and wide-ranging productions. Here film teams accompany their productions to this city in Saxony and answer the questions of the audience after the films have been screened.

The centrepiece of the SCHLINGEL programme is formed by national and international competitions including focuses on individual countries that change from year to year and sections outside of competition. They bring more than 100 films from all countries in the world to the screen, films that take the audience on a trip to foreign countries with exciting, perceptive, thought-provoking stories far from the usual Hollywood clichés.

Every year more than 700 long and short feature films and cartoons from more than 70 countries apply for a place in the programme. At the end of the festival children’s youth and specialist juries select the winners in the various categories and award SCHLINGEL Trophies and five-figure prize money.

In addition to first-class film enjoyment, SCHLINGEL provides an ambitious and varied supporting programme with panel discussions, lectures, workshops and exhibitions. The focus here is particularly on film and media education offerings for kindergartens, schools and nurseries where the participants receive an insight into topics such as film production, handling a camera & co. or writing critiques through practical tasks.

Accredited visitors from the film trade inform themselves in seminars and forums about the latest trends and issues concerning children’s and youth films and exchange ideas with one another in lively discussions. Some events are also open to interested members of the public.

Above and beyond the annual organisation of SCHLINGEL Saxony-wide matinee tours have been established. In this way selected productions are also made available to a larger audience outside the festival. Various international film presentation in, for example, China, Canada and Russia also pursue this goal.

The patron of the festival is the Saxon Prime Minister, Stanislaw Tillich. Co-organiser of the event is the Saxon State Centre for Private Radio and New Media (SLM).
